Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 within Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. She was a night nurse, allowing her aunt time that she required in the working day to pursue her passion for writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that art could serve to engage people. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who had a strong social conscience and advised DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay, who grew up alongside her extended family at Compton she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights protest through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at university. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house of one of the jury. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the business of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from the college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also established a range of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
