Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young child. The aunt she had was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could spend the day to literature, art as well as theater, among other things. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art was an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama was the inspiration she used to produce a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and obtained diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. As an undergraduate student DuVernay was interested in creating in the broadcast media. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being tasked to watch the home of one of the jurors of the jury as well as look through their trash. She was disappointed by her journalism duties, and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant at a tiny film studio, right after graduating from college.
